Bowie Secrets on Conan
6/26/2006 10:05:00 PM

I'm adamant about this. Bowie is the COOLEST rock star ever. This video clip is hilarious!! Click on the play button in the centre of the image below to play it! I *heart* David Bowie.

Thanks to Sarah for sending this little beauty along. Bowie's been busy starring in an upcoming film called The Prestige alongside HUGH JACKMAN (Omg, faint faint). It's in 'post-production' status right now. I CAN'T wait til it is out. David Bowie is an amazing actor, if you do not know. I've never ever been disappointed - my favourite was his role as Andy Warhol in the Julian Schnabel film "Basquiat". For you 80s kids, you would so know he was the goblin king in the Labyrinth! I also love "Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence", I think it's such an awesome film. Ahh, I love all his films. In fact I might go and watch my "The Man Who Fell To Earth" DVD now. Tschuss!

I hate music.
6/26/2006 03:42:00 PM

Well this is just about the most entertaining websites I've come across in a very long time. It's a blog on about how this chick hates music. As cheesy as that may sound, she is incredibly well informed and has probably heard and know of more bands than I do. When you go to her site, to the right on the side bar, if you scroll down there are links to all the comments she has ever made of every band. I read her comments about David Bowie and she even knows the name of the kid who punched Bowie in the face (that resulted in his blue/brown eye dilemma). How the hell would someone who hated Bowie so much would go out of their way to find out the name of this kid, who *I* didn't even know the name of.

Anyway, I think the site is hilarious and the comments about musicians are incredibly entertaining. Here's an extract from her bagging the shit out of John Lennon's Imagine.

"Imagine" is a 'standard' - in other words it is MOR drek that your gran likes. Rockboys who would sneer at you for liking sappily tuneful stuff by Andrews Williams and Gold will defend "Imagine" to the death, not because of what it is (pawky shite) but because of who it's by. This is the inevitable end result of paying more than cursory attention to the name on the label: such forbidden knowledge is fatal to your taste.

There's a whole lot more from where that came from. I don't agree with most of the things she says but that's not the point! It's funny! Go to: I Hate Music.

Postcards from Melbourne!
6/24/2006 11:25:00 PM

Today, and for the first time, I did some touristy things around my home city, Melbourne. My friend Ben has his Japanese host sister, Emi, over for a few days and we took her around Melbourne doing things like a breakfast on Degraves, shopping, seeing random Melbourne sites and lastly... going on the observation deck on the Rialto! Haha. I never thought I'd ever make it up there but today I did.

It's awesome. I have never seen Melbourne like this before. It is quite the stunning city. Let these photos speak for themselves - Click on them for larger (and better) views.

Crown Entertainment Complex and Southbank,
Albert Park in the distance, Port Melbourne to the right.

This part was rather funny. There were these binoculars that you could use to look into the distance and that was what the instructions on the side (drilled in, no less) of the large heavy metal obstacles that said "For long distance viewing only". Of course we decided to just look into apartment buildings. To our disappointment we didn't find anything too crash hot to write home about, except one guy standing near the window of the Crown Towers peering over the river. How exciting. It is also a Saturday so no chance of spotting CEOs getting happy endings from their secretaries. Damn!

Yarra River, more Southbank, Eureka tower (that tall thing) - World's tallest residential building, and Melbourne Cricket Ground and Melbourne Park off in the distance.

A small portion of the Central Business District,
Flinders St Station and Fed Square

Of course, y'know you can't compare to a view of say New York City which looks something a little like this (taken when I was up on the Empire State Building):

God, I love New York *heart flutters as I look at that photo*. But y'know, Melbourne, like New York, has it's own character that is incredibly strong and unique. That is what I've noticed today... being sorta put in the shoes as a tourist... trying to find out things about Melbourne to show or talk about. Walking down Collins St, I've never really appreciated the buildings and architecture - especially down near the Rialto end. They are beautiful (unfortunately I didn't take any pictures thinking that I'll be in Melbourne for a little while still :P). The ANZ (I think it was) building is incredibly gothic with thorny spires and gargoyles hanging off the edges. In many ways Melbourne is a lot like New York but in many ways it stands apart - like the lack of public transport past midnight... haha, no I'm kidding... well, that's true... but y'know there ARE some good things that Melbourne does have - it's laid back, friendly and accommodating - just to name a few.

After coming down from the Rialto observation deck, we went into the riveting RIALTOVISION and saw the lamest documentary (aka count the cliched tourist spots in Melbourne or simply, a half hour long advert of Melbourne) about the city ever to the equally as cheesy soundtrack. It is even described as "a sight and sound extravaganza". Emi, who's obviously not a Melbournian, fell asleep. I think that just speaks for itself. As for me? I watched it for entertainment purposes and wonder how come I've never even heard of some of these tourist 'hotspots'. Yes, things such as... hmm, oh I can't remember. Something along the lines of "let's ride on a horse around thorny dry bushes, cook up a storm on the barbie with these people with incredibly heavy put-on aussie accents for the sake of the camera and let's chuck our dog on the horse too". Awesome.

We headed home straight after the Rialto as the weather was shit and everyone looked rather tired (I'm sure it was the Rialtovision). I also wasn't feeling too good with my stomach playing up again. I really need to get it checked out again. Grr! Was a fun day though and Emi seemed to be having a good time which was most important. She's a great tourist, very open to the Australian culture and generally all things Australian - she was willing to give up tiramisu to try some sticky date pudding - that deserves some kudos because the term "sticky date pudding" in itself doesn't sound too magnificent in wetting one's palate!

A night out with the Cerevisaphiles.
6/23/2006 09:07:00 PM

The image to the left is what a beer mat says is a 'cerevisaphile', in case you didn't know. A lover of beer. And how was I lovin' my first beer on Wednesday night to mark the end of my exams for Semester 1! Woohoo! My first beer was in fact a Beez Neez at Young & Jackson's. I've never tried this before and was curious. It's not really that great. I would have much preferred a St. Arnou Pilsner, which was what Andrew and Downz had. After tasting theirs, Beez Neez just tasted like soda water. Myself, Andrew and Brendan (below) at Y&Js.

Waited at Y&Js for Brendan and Steve and then made our way to find some dinner. We ended up at Lounge on Swanston St (for more beer) which served some awesome parmas and BLTs - that's a nice looking parma there, Steve (right)! There was some rather awesome contemporary artwork on the walls which were for sale. There was one adjacent to our table of which had some abstract shapes on it, which Andrew identified one as a penis. It was so not.

After Ben had joined us at Lounge we moseyed off to James Squire Brewhouse. The place had awesome beer but did not have that pub feel - incredibly sterile for a pub, in fact, but what can you expect from a city pub. I started off with a Golden Pale Ale and then later a Porter. I could have had more but I was so unexpectedly tired that I just couldn't drink anymore. Sad really because I wanted to go blind. The atmosphere just wasn't really clicking with the beer, and as Spence puts it "It's like drinking coffee under fluorescent lights". They had some awesome beermats, however. Apparently there are 18 different beermats and the one above about Cerevisaphiles was one of them. The one you see on the left is also another one of them. And below are one that I particularly liked - the story of the 'honeymoon'. I want to live in Babylon... as a groom of course. Here's why...

How awesome is that! All the beer you could drink (even if it's Beez Neez) for one whole month. That would be far most the sweetest month ever. Y'know, I bet that's why men get married. Except now they don't get that free flowing beer - I think it's because it hasn't occurred to them yet. Okay, I'll stop with the man-bashing.

Here's some more random pics taken at the BROOhouse.

Ben (post making a silly face) - it's still pretty silly to me.

Brendan and Steve and a James Squire Porter:
What a good looking family!

Ben expressing his love for Tai Chi

No, my engineering friends aren't too much of posers for the camera, I apologise. But it was a fun night and after weeks of studying and having not so much of a social life, beer never tasted so good! Thanks for an awesome night, guys!

Exams are *almost* over!
6/20/2006 06:38:00 PM

Semester 1 is coming to an end REAL SOON! With my very last exam tomorrow, I can finally sit back... and go straight back to uni :(. Get this, I have to go into Uni first thing on thursday to start clearing out the wave tank and discuss our wave generation methods with my fellow 'Team Tsunami' and my thesis supervisor. Sigh. Just when I thought I had a holiday! I will be going away camping for the odd three days or so... but most of the time back in Melbourne I will be at Uni! Joy of joys!

I've been working my ass off for the past month in preparation for these exams. Finally things starting to pay off. Gonna be working a lot harder next semester too - 22 contact hours per week, not including thesis work. I will have absolutely no life and absolutely no nothing else. Oh well, nothing better than a nice solid stressful semester to finish off my time at University :P Woohoo. In what joyful forms 'culmination' comes in!

Oh, btw, you all should check out Steve's cover of Moonage Daydream on his blog. A nice mellowed out version compared to the high powered high pitched "I'm an alligaTOR!" of David Bowie's original version ;) I've been trying to match his vocals in that respect, but I end up having to pop menthols to soothe my aching throat.

So, I must go and wrap up my studies for tomorrow's exam. Today's exam for finance was EASY AS PIE. Omg, like seriously. Yay. I'm expecting nothing less than a distinction. An HD would be nice. It's an advanced level subject too. I really need to increase my finance subject marks. In your face investment bank who rejected me! Not that I have any hang ups. Oh no sirree.

Ladies & Gentleman, please calm down!
6/18/2006 12:17:00 AM

Hilarious. Whilst I am deeply touched that you all care for me so much by asking me whether everything is alright after reading my 'mismarcelised' post below, please don't take everything that I write on this blog as the blueprint to what's going on in my life! I simply put it there for pure entertainment purposes. Why? Because it's such a good word. Who has not ever been mismarcelised before? It's not even a real word but it should be. "Why are you looking like shit today?", "Oh, I've just been mismarcelised", "Oh. I see. Well I hope things work out for you". The word is perfect! We never will ever have to explain the stories of lost love anymore because they are incredibly tedious, of great length, and at the end of the day they are all the same anyway. The word just sums it up so well. It's the y=mx+c of relationships (or lack thereof) - just change your variables and you still get the same linear curve. The more severe the mismarcelisation, the greater the gradient. It simply MUST be in the dictionary! I shall contact Oxford dictionary publishing tomorrow.

Another word that should be in the dictionary is "Georgina" (with a small pic of my face there) which would mean "n. to describe a lazy person who has great ambition but of which is only limited to the walls of the skull or a moleskine and thus never ever becomes a reality. "Wow, you're being such a Georgina lately. You've had that sewing machine for 5 years already and you still haven't done anything yet!". Also describes a person who enjoys eating choc peppermint ice-cream, suffers from PMS (Putting up with Men's Shit), twirls and studies of all the countries on a globe, spins the globe and randomly stopping it to see which country she should visit next, and dabbles in some unclassifiable art."

Aw. I'll stop being mean. I don't really put up with men's shit. Men are nice. (I convincingly and constantly tell myself this since I AM doing engineering. It's even on my wall in my room "It's okay, Georgina. They are just stupid." :P). Ok, I'm kidding. Considering the crap that I have to put up with like "huhuhuh... ur a lesbian cos you do engineering", "huhuhuh... asian women drivers", "huhuhuh... women", I should be a full-blown feminist by now but I'm not. I'm not sure whether that means I'm just a really easy going and an 'unoffendable' person... or that I am simply not aware of the degree of the harrassment to take some action. Hmm... well whatever. If I'm not upset then why should I make myself upset, no?

Ah, I am digressing. And I shall now to go bed :) But before I go, I am sooo excited to announce that I have a COLLABORATOR for my Ziggy project. And that is Mr. STAVOS (aka. Steve... haha, did I get it right Steve? Or were you Vladimir... oh no wait, Ben's Vladimir, how funny!), the excellent guitar player. It's an honour to have him on this tribute to one of rock's greatest albums. It shall be fun! xx Tata.

Word of the Day.
6/15/2006 06:19:00 PM

mismarcelise
|mis märˈselize|
v. to be liked as a friend only by a member of the opposite sex after pursuing them in a romantic way (especially after mistakenly perceiving a relationship that was going to flourish after patience). A misunderstanding between two people who each have different ideas about the love between them. Comes from the choice of a potential partner who you thought loved you, so you devoted a lot of your time to them in the hope of romance only to be denied by that person in favour of the "other", known as 'Marcel'.

Oh how many times have we been mismarcelised.

1 down, 3 to go.
6/15/2006 01:07:00 PM

SUPER BORING POST, BE WARNED!!

There, disclaimer over, I 3 more exams left after completing my first one today. I hope I friggin' pass this subject. I have three days til my next exam but I have three exams in a row from Monday to Wednesday: Thermodynamics, Mgmt. of Financial Intermediaries, and lastly Composite Structures. Should be cool.

Right now I can't really be bothered with studying. I might take a nap for a few hours. Y'know there's such a brain drain after sitting an exam. You're just too exhausted to barely think about another subject.

I dyed my hair again. I had some dark ashy brown colour before which I am really sick of already. It is also starting to fade so you can see bits of yellow showing through from my previous hair colour! Awful. So now its almost jet black. I dyed it "intense purple black"... so it's pretty much real deep black with some violet accents when exposed to strong light. It's good to be black again :)

In other news, I'm going camping these holidays! Yay. I can't wait. Hmm... I have nothing else too exciting to say because I'm indeed a very boring person at this time of year. No interesting social events to speak of. Oh, I'm absolutely loving, and I mean LUUUURVING The Grate's album "Gravity Won't Get You High". I've been listening to it constantly for the last two weeks. It's awesome, you MUST check it out. 19 20 20!!

Also getting towards the end of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. It's taking me ages because I don't have much time to read and I do bit by bit at night before I sleep. Ahh, what an awesome book. It's actually giving me nightmares.

I've also got a few projects to work on to preserve my sanity from all these university-ish activities. I want to learn all the songs off Ziggy and record them all! Big challenge cos I actually am having massive issues with some of the songs... so this may take a while. But it gives me a goal to work towards. Also, I've started a new online travel journal, which you won't have access to until it's completed! I'm slowly filling in entries from every trip that I've taken in my life so it's a bit of a feat.

Anyways, that's all from me... I'm gonna grab some grub now. Good luck for all your exams, you Uni students! :)

Nestle acquires Uncle Tobys
6/11/2006 07:05:00 PM

As some of you may have been aware, Uncle Tobys, the much loved Australian nutritious wholefoods company which provided us with Chewy muesli bars, Roll-Ups, Le Snack, OTs, etc, has been sold to Nestle. The wonderful memories of primary school when you would open up your lunch box and find happiness in the form of Le Snack or a Roll-Up is no longer Australian owned, but part of the family of the horrid coproration that is Nestle.

“For some, this negative reaction might even lead to them avoiding buying Uncle Toby’s products, although it is hard to predict just how large or significant this segment of consumers might be,” Dr Downes said.

“At the other end of the consumer spectrum, many may not notice or care about the change of ownership, provided there is no discernable change to the products that appear under the Uncle Toby's name.”

There is some unfortunate truth to that last sentence. I'm sure that a large chunk of consumers don't have a clue about Nestle or will be bothered or moved by this sale. Uncle Toby's make up 80% of Australia's nutritious snack market - try to stop that! I can see Nestle's evil trick now. It is to buy out everything that people love and use in their daily lives so that people who are boycotting it will eventually surrender to its powers. It's like Nestle is Big Brother and I am Winston Smith. I will not surrender but I am truly devastated.

Why boycott Nestle?

I think I'm gonna go craaazy...
6/09/2006 10:07:00 PM

Omg I am so over studying for exams already. Why did I choose this subject???? Get this, I have a huge chance of failing a subject that is not only not in my field of specialisation, but a subject that constitutes towards NOTHING but something I have to do to graduate. Argh. I could have chosen so many other subjects, but no... it had to be this one. Why? Cos George thought it would be interesting! Sure it is interesting. But it's no longer interesting when you know you're gonna fail it and will have to do six friggin subjects next semester instead of just five.

In other news, I have given up in my hunt for jobs because I have other plans. And let's hope these other plans actually go to plan. Oh I don't know. I don't know what is really happening. Who does?

I haven't been so stressed in so long. This subject, which I am going to fail, is taking up so much of my time because I don't want to fail! Yet... if I were to fail it anyway, what's the point in jeopardising my other (and more important) subjects because of it? If I know I'm going to fail, why try harder? I can just come to terms with it, choose a cool subject for next semester and let live.

Anyways, I'm going to tend to some finance now. I can't wait til exams are over. I really need a break :(

Another Franz Ferdinand FAN GIRL moment!
6/05/2006 02:18:00 AM

I have had a few Franz Ferdinand 'Fan Girl' moments. And tonight was no exception.

I was online typing up an email when Robyn came online to tell me that Franz were gonna be doing a live chat online in 11 minutes. And I'm like "Sweet, will be fun battling around in a chat room with a million fans". No, I didn't think too much of it but I thought I'd log in to sniff out the scene.

Turned out to be a lot more amusing than I thought! Nick, the guitarist, was online and we had a few interesting short conversations. I asked some ridiculous questions because I figured that he'll only respond to those that are ridiculous.

Let these images take you through what I got tonight!

At this stage I was absolutely pissing myself. Prior to this absurd question (btw, Alex is the band's frontman - absolutely hot as fuck), I asked a few other more profound questions like "What was it like playing at the festival in Thailand?", or "How does the Big Day Out rate in terms of festivals around the world?" and I received no answer. But he decided to answer to my impending marriage proposal to Alex. That's fine by me! Moving on...

Gotta love bands who love David Bowie. I'm glad we share the same interests.

Gotta love a band who loves Oscar Wilde! I can so see a dinner party happening. We'd spend endless hours talking about Bowie and Wilde over expensive wine and a meal cooked by Alex.

I thought I'd chuck this one in just for good measure. No response. I wonder why.

Considering how many people were online throwing random questions, I was indeed lucky to sustain conversation that lasted more than one reply. Rather pointless conversations, but that's the point of online chatting hey? I'm happy, cos I'm gonna be marrying ALEX KAPRANOS :P

Ah what a fun night. Yet another serendipitous Franz experience with Robyn. See her blog for her story. She got another kiss!

xo
