Overall verdict, I think that the night was rather successful. Personally, I had a great time and the speeches were so so brilliant - I couldn't ask for anything better. The night blitzed for me as I was constantly running around (my music stuffed up and so I freaked out and spent a while getting it running again - dramas!) making sure everything was running smoothly. It's a shame that I couldn't spend more time with everyone - I was running from group to group and even still, I don't think it was enough.

Me and my family at home before going to the venue.
So of course, organising the party was in itself a HUGE task. Knowing me, I had to supervise and have the final say about everything from the music to the lights and down to the very last table scatter. But I shall not get into the nitty gritty details here as it's a huge bore.
I got there at around 12 midday to put up the lights. Here's me with my disco ball ;)

Shiny Disco Balls!
It didn't take as long as I thought - pretty easy!! Setting up the projector took me ages tho - trying to find the perfect angle and position. Then I laid out every single table scatter. That was rather fun. Then when I was satisfied, we went home and relaxed til it was time to get ready.

The room before the balloons were there.
Auntie Sylvia and Robyn came over at around 5 to do my hair for me and as soon as I knew it, it was time to get going to the venue!!

Check out my face.
Got to the venue and did the last minute setting up. I was like totally nervous - as you do when you want the night to run perfectly. People started to trickle in and so I was kept busy by welcoming guests and getting them drinks. So it was mingle mingle and chat chat chat. I think about 70 people were there during the time when most people were there. Some people who RSVPed saying that they will come didn't turn up which was very annoying and tactless.
Halfway during this first hour, my iRiver decided to die (run out of batt) and I didn't have my charger with me. I thought that as long as its connected to the computer it is fine - but apparently not. Panic panic, luckily I had a backup playlist on my iBook so I disconnected the projector and hooked the laptop to the sound system and go dad to drive home and pick up the power cord. Phew!
My disco/mirrorball seemed to be doing its job - it lit up the room like as though we were floating around in Champagne!!

Isn't it pretty! I should have gotten more pics of the room - unfortunately my busy-ness didn't let it cross my mind.
Come 8.45pm and we had the first speech session. First up was Andrew Marshall - my best buddy from Uni. It wasn't as embarassing as I had predicted. I was kinda anticipating all this crap about screaming when playing sport and teasing me of being an 'engineering dyke'. It was rather mild compared to others ;) It was a great speech and summed up our uni life together very well.

Andrew speaking.
Next was Robyn - who spoke of our USA trip as well as getting some videos made by Andy & Iana from Chicago and King Tommy in New York!! Was very very cool and she spoke of my habit of sticking my hand down my pyjama pants and scratching my butt cheek *how embarassing*.

Robyn.
Next up was Dennison (or should I say 'Den Den') who made a very lovely speech about growing up together and staying as good as friends as we are now. Nothing embarassing at all - just very touching and teary eyed stuff! *sniff sniff* Thank you thank you...

Thanks to Mr. Cool, Phiroze Dalal, for being there, I have these photos of my speech givers. Unfortunately Mr. Cool, Phiroze Dalal, had to leave shortly after my first speech session, none of this was to follow :( WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO MY PHOTOGRAPHER?! .. *sigh*. Things that happen when Georgie doesn't have the camera.

Me and Mr. Cool, Phiroze Dalal - the coolest person on Earth.
Moving on, after Den's speech it was more mingle mingle and a bit of that dancefloor groovin.

Desmond and Amy doing some moves.
Come 10pm, it was time for my 2nd speech session. First up was Dad... who made a very nice speech - both funny and very uncorny. I hate corny speeches - so tongue in cheek and makes you want to cringe in disgust. I'm so glad no one at my party made any corny speeches!!!
Then it was Adri who, unfortunately, embarassed the crap out of me. I don't think I've ever been so embarassed in my life! She photocopied something really really really really sad that I wrote back in Year 12 and DISTRIBUTED them!! Horrified, I nearly died. But all was good in the end, I suppose - who can help a narrow minded Year 12 student who didn't know any better? ;) But yeah, even tho it was embarassing - the speech was fantastic and I guess 'required' and 'expected' for a 21st. I haven't had an embarassing speech yet so she hit the spot :P
Following Adri was Sarah. She made the coolest presentation/speech thing. And so so funny. Using the layout of Frank Sinatra's "It Was A Very Good Year" song, Sarah made some cool poetry in myself in context. I.e: "When George was 14" and so on and so forth. My personal favorite is "Engineering boys thought she was hot, but George thought not" - or something liek that anyway. It was funny cos I had a lot of my engineering boys there too :P But they won't mind I'm sure...
My engineering boys....

And their girlfriends.
Following Sarah it was Justin - my my big-sized little brother. He made a really touching speech in a very entertaining way. He was my MC for the night too and he did a brilliant job. I couldn't have had a better MC in my honest opinion.

Me and Justin. So so big and grown up and mature for his age. He does me proud.
Following Justin, it was my turn. I don't know how my speech went so you have to ask the audience :P I think I did okay.

Then it was cake time! There was some time to fill while the 21 candles were being lit and so my brother used the opportunity to embarass me even further. I had to take the microphone off him otherwise I would lose all my friends. I sweeaarrr...

Me blowing the cake. I was so self conscious about falling out of my dress as I was in such a bad state - everything was falling off (ie: tape to keep my boobs from falling out)
After cake - which was this exquisite strawberry cheesecake - mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm - it was onto dancing and wrapping up the night. I hate it when its after the particulars of 'cake time' because some people start leaving! Grrr... stay and dance! But many had work the following day (ie: My A|X buddies) and so I understand totally. I just wished the night could have lasted longer!
Here are a few random pics that are my favourite:
(some taken by Sarah, the great)

Alas, as I said, the night didn't quite last long as it should! And I didn't drink enough either ;) But I had a good night and I'm so glad that I had it. I was actually considering of not having a 21st party at all... unbelievable huh? I had a feeling I'd regret if I didn't. 21 is simply a number. You only turn 21 once but then again, you only turn 22 once as well. The 21 coming-of-age is simply, in my mind, a great excuse to celebrate - throw a one off huge party - with all the people that are important in your life. It's to celebrate the how friends and family have impacted the life of the birthday individual and vice versa. And for all those reasons, I'm glad I did it! And thanks to Mum & Dad who made it happen in the first place ;)
Thank you everyone who came (in particular my interstate buddies, Amy, Jess and Julian) - I had a blast and I hope you did too. Please re-visit for an installment on the birthday presents that I got! ;)
xoxox
PS: What is with the age 23? Is it a time when people suddenly become mature? Eli came up to me and said "You are a 21 year old with the sophistication of a 23 year old", and I had 3 birthday cards that said something like "You are 21 but you act as though you're 23" - someone fill me in!!
