Trams and cars: The discrimination of the Melbourne transport system
8/31/2005 05:47:00 PM

WHY is that trams are allowed to delay cars and yet cars are strictly not allow to delay trams?

Here is a quick scenario:

1. Car wants to turn right into a side street from a main road that has tram tracks. Car gets onto tram tracks to wait for a clearing in traffic to turn right. Car does not see a tram behind it. Heavy traffic. Tram eventually pulls up behind car. Tram driver goes nuts at car. Assume 20 passengers on tram and thus 20 people delayed - momentarily.

2. Tram travelling slowly down a main road. Stops every 5 seconds to drop off/pick up people. A river of cars follow slowly behind tram waiting for the best opportune moment to overtake snail-like tram. Tram causes massive traffic jam which extends to junctions and beyond. Definetly more than 20 people delayed - not momentarily but for the rest of their journey (so long as they are stuck behind bloody tram).

Is this some tactic to make people take public transport? If it is, IT IS NASTY. I cringe whenever I see the ad on trams "Delay a tram and you're delaying a lot of people" - well, what about "Tram drivers should learn to drive faster than 25km/hr?!!!!"

People aren't taking public transport because:
a. the public transport system sucks (1. trams and buses are too slow 2. it stops are midnight)
b. it is way too expensive given its level of inefficiency - petrol... PETROL is cheaper (even in today's terms)
c. more trams = more traffic jams = bad greenhouse effects

People TAKE public transport because:
a. they have no fucking choice (no car, can't drive, etc)
b. there is insufficient parking opportunities at destination
c. they are drunk
d. ... insert other reasons that I can't think of.
e. you are a massive greenie (but your temper is getting frayed)

But I digress.
Basically what I'm trying to say is I. Hate. Trams. Who. Are. Going. At. 10km/hr. In. Front. Of. Me. And. Not. Giving. Me. A. Chance. To. Overtake. And. Think. They. Are. So. Important. That. The. Human. Race. Depends. On. Them.

And if you say "Well, why don't you take public transport then?", then I shall say "You are illiterate and can't read the above reasons" ... PLUS I go to Monash University.

Racquet ball kills
8/30/2005 04:27:00 PM

Andrew, Jenko and I played racquet ball today and I had my ass caned. First it was just me and Andrew and I was working up some kind of sweat I've never seen before. I was thinking "Jenko hurry up and get here and SAVE ME" - he did eventually. But it was good fun - I just suck a lot. I think it gave me a week's worth of exercise.

I'm stuck in the library right now - thank god that I have my maccie mac mac here with me (oh, did I tell ya - I got a new 14" iBook! Me loves it). Just did an Options tute that I missed a couple of weeks ago. It's not so bad - it's an interesting subject. I like derivatives.

The reason why I'm at uni for so long is because I have dinner with the A|X girls tonight. It's on Dandenong Rd so I didn't see the point going all the way home and coming out again. It's about 5-10 mins from uni.

I want to have my own website. I feel that this blog doesn't quite suit. I need to have more space to exploit my personality on. I feel contained and rather oppressed.

Furthermore, my fountain pen ink just ran out and I am iffy with going back to the ball point to write out my next tute. Yes, I write with a fountain pen, got a problem with that?

This is the cake mum made for me!
As I was saying earlier I was feeling a bit on the "das crapshite" side. Well, this totally made my day. I feel so much better after this. I think I was just in dire need for some luvin' ;)

The big two one.

Happy Birthday to me!

Have you ever noticed that you get really tired on your birthday? Especially when it's about the time of your actual birth? I don't know - it happens to be almost every year. I spent the last hour napping because I was feeling so bad. I don't know why I'm feeling so crap today when I really don't have a reason to.

I woke up this morning with no messages on my phone so I thought that everyone has forgotten about me. But I wasn't bothered by that cos it was still early on in the day. I got to uni still not receiving anything and then I realised that my inbox was full. I deleted it and soon than enough, my phone went spastic with all these sms sounds. I got really excited! Then I went to have coffee with Andrew, Benny and Michael - Andrew shouted me a coffee and we shared a lemon tart - mmm. It was beautiful weather too so we were sitting out in the sun with tarts and coffee - perfect! Later we walked over to Sports & Rec to book a squash court for tomorrow.

Andrew then gave me an early present which was terribly exciting because I was expecting no presents today (most people would be giving it to me on sat). As a fellow lover of coffee I got this cool Kathmandu portable flask/plunger - so that I can have filtered coffee on the go rather than instant! How versatile.

I came home and found my cat (neighbours cat, but it's pretty much ours now), Moo Moo (hehe), in the same position in his basket in which I left him that morning. He's been feeling sick lately and so I thought he had died!! Luckily he didn't so I picked the basket up with him inside and brought him into the house - just to get him out of the heat. It was hot today wasn't it? I cleaned his food bowl and gave him some fresh water and dry food and nursed him for about half an hour. There's something about that cat. He's so loving. He always wants to be around people all the time and runs to my car to greet me every time I come home. He actually notices my car and runs to it before I even enter my drive way! That cat has some good karma.

My mum baked me a cake tonight which we're going to have in a little while. I had some yummy dinner too - lamb cutlets, pan fried, on a bed of mash with oniony brown sauce & of course salad. And you know how I'm a sucker for lamb :P I've been complaining to my parents about how I'm feeling like shit today and they are making a great effort to make me feel better. :)

In other news, a tattoo update: My tattoo has completed its scabbing process (it scabbed about twice!) and its no longer raised. If I run my fingers across it, you can slightly feel it but not as prominently as before. Sometimes I'd forget that I actually have a tattoo and I give myself a pleasant surprise when I catch sight of it in the bathroom. Sometimes I'd get a bit iffy about it - I want it to be slightly lower so that it will show when I sit down or bend over. But at the same time, I can wear backless tops and it'll be in the perfect position. I can't decide which is better. Oh well.

So right now I should be doing something more useful with myself but I just cannot be bothered. Today so doesn't feel like a birthday. I suppose since I haven't had my party yet I don't feel things have been justified :P. I'm glad I decided to have a party because I was close to not having one. I think I would regret if I didn't do anything because I'm feeling like such a bum right now.

I hope you guys like this new greenish layout! :)

God look at the tumbleweed.
8/27/2005 12:03:00 AM

Please help me clear out the cobwebs in this place!! Omg!

Yes, I've been slack but so so busy ever since I got back from New York. A million things to do ... I haven't even completely unpacked.

I spent the last 3 hours hurriedly applying for vacation jobs at Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, KPMG and Ernst & Young. Man, god knows how they went. The deadline for applications is 12 midnight and I submitted the KPMG one JUST IN TIME. Phew. Hey, it isn't MY fault that I'm so disorganised. I have so many other things to do!!

Well, I have to go to bed. I am currently reading this book called "The Tibetan book of living and dying" - it is truly fantastic. And such an inspiration. I recommend that ALL of you, regardless of your religion, to read it. This may sound so depressing, but it really isn't, I have been having a few freak out sessions lately as I contemplate about my own death. It will come one day and I will lose everything that I've worked for, everything that I loved, every treasured memory in my life. The impermanence of life freaked me out and I thought of this almost every day. I lost faith in all my spiritual leanings thinking with my scientific mind that how can these things be possible when it can't be scientifically proven?

This book is my answer and I'm going through it and slowly I am gaining peace with myself and that at my moment of death, I will not be afraid. I'm not weird for thinking about such morbid topics. I find it a revelation and something that will make me stronger and propel me to live life to the fullest. I will no longer need a near death experience or lose someone dear to me for me to start thinking that death is real. My freak out session, as scary as it was when it hit me, is indeed a blessing. The problem in the world today is that everyone ignores their own impermanence. They have a general knowledge that one day they will die. But have they thought of the experience and panic that they will go thru during that moment when they know they are about to die?

It is such ignorance that makes us fill our lives with the frivolous. How well do you know yourself? If suddenly I was to take away your family, your job, your belongings, your home and dumped you in some foreign land and you're on your own - how well will you know yourself? Do we need to fill our lives constantly with something to do - something to do with friends, something to keep us occupied all the time? Spend time with yourselves... It's the closest road to the peace of mind and confidence you search for deep inside.
